Sparrows

 A strong beginning.

 Close-up of textured lines.

The finished piece to the right. Adjustments were made on the right arm and hand. A park bench was added to stablelize the composition.(Very poor photo, the glass in the frame reflected the light from the window).

 Approximately  18" x 24"

Graphite on Paper

A couple of scriptures from the Gospel of Luke (12:6-7) are the inspiration for this piece.

Luke 12:6  Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?
7  But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.

I like where it is headed. It is an interesting juxtaposition, the use of such strong strokes to form such a tender message and image.

It is also a challenge to find the balance between texture and tonality. I want tonal softness, without losing the texture of the drawing. I'm not trying to make a photograph. I prefer that it says "drawing"! Even at the risk of losing some of the tenderness.

That's why I will have to put more texture on the sparrow. It also appears that I may have to change the right hand as well; looks too mature for a child. Back to the drawing board!
